The welterweight bout between Burns and Thompson at UFC 264, scheduled to go down on July 10th, seems to be finalized already. Speaking to ESPN, Dana White, the UFC president, said that the pair are about to lock their horns in a bout that will have massive title implications.
The bout between the two former welterweight contenders is targeted for the UFC 264, although no contracts about the match have been signed. The match has only been agreed upon verbally, with the venue yet to be announced.
Thompson is coming off from his last fight against Geoff Neal that went down in December. The fight was a thrilling one that saw Thompson take home a knee injury after the 5th round. The knee injury he sustained came after his clinical tackle that aided in his win in the fifth round.
On the other hand, Burns fell to Kamaru Usman at UFC 258, whose precision helped him secure a TKO in the 3rd round despite being hurt by Burns in the 1st round. Burns, who had expressed his wish to fight Colby Covington, is likely to face Thompson in July after Colby refused the offer.
Both Burns and Thompson are in a suitable position for a title challenge, and a win for either will assure one foot in the title contention. A win for Burns will cement his place as the title chaser should he win against Thompson. On the flipside, Thompson will also display himself as the suitable title challenger should he win against Burns.
The bout between Thompson and Burns may be among other scheduled bouts to co-headline the Pay-Per-Click UFC 264 with the main card falling to Conor McGregor Vs. Dustin Poirier.
